The drivers in the Amsoil NELCAR Legends Tour are making the trip to New Hampshire Motor Speedway this weekend for the final race of the 2011 season. Mathew Bourgoine, driver of the No. 38 legend car, has had an amazing sophomore season with 11 top-three finishes, including two wins. His first career legend win came at Unity Raceway; his second win was a photo finish as he edged the 56 car of Evan Beaulieu at BRMS.
“I didn’t even think I won. I didn’t think I was going to get it. I was in second place chasing him down with two laps to go and the caution came out. On the restart, I thought I was going to get freight trained being in the outside grove, but I was able to keep up on the first lap and I put my head down and was able to get around [Beaulieu] on lap two.”
Last weekend, NELCAR ran the inaugural race at Star Speedway, and the 38 car made its fifth straight podium finish. “The car was going good; the track was good. I like the back stretch the best a little bumpy, it kind of reminds me of my home track (Unity Raceway) with all the bumps.”
Prior to the race, Bourgoine wasn’t sure if the outside lane would work, “I hadn’t tried the second grove yet, but it feels like there could be a second grove.” He was able to make the outside grove work for him during the feature race as he took the high side to make his way up to second place.
Bourgoine is racing this weekend at NHMS. “I need to tear my car apart, change gears, put the road course setup in it. It's the first time going to run the road course with the new setup in it. Hopefully, it will go pretty good.” Though the “King of the Road Course” has to be Shaun Buffington, who has won every NELCAR race held on the 1.6-mile road course at NHMS. So, I asked Matt if he could beat Shaun this weekend, Matt’s reply: “I’m going to try, but Shaun has been racing that track for a long time.”
Maybe Matt can pull some magic out of his hat this weekend and get win number three at "The Magic Mile."
