Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards Started Their Magic at NHMS
Is there any question the final two contenders in the 2011 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup would be Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards? Not at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
What started out as a 12 man race has now become a two man show featuring Edwards and Stewart. Both have different styles of driving, different teams and a different history in the sport. Edwards is chasing his first title, but Stewart is looking to sit right where he did in 2005, at the head table. One substantial element ties these two racing titans together in 2011; each paid a special visit to New England as guests of “The Magic Mile,” one by boat and the other by kart.
Stewart visited F1 Boston where his go-kart lapped the field showing local reporters what it really takes to win a race. The driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet dominated the day, winning every race against every challenger. He left New England with a smile on his face and a gleam in his eye. Little did we know his momentum would carry through his trip to the Granite State and return it to a Victory Lane visit in September.
Edwards hit the water off Portsmouth, N.H. and hauled in an impressive lobster catch. He reminded us of the fabled Victory Lane moment when winning drivers lift Loudon the Lobster to celebrate their New England win. The driver of the No. 99 Aflac Ford showed us all that consistency matters when he rocketed to the points lead.
Only three points separate Edwards and Stewart as NASCAR’s top series heads to Phoenix International Raceway for the Kobalt Tools 500 on Sunday. Coverage for the event begins at 3 p.m. (EDT) on ESPN.
The New Hampshire Motor Speedway 2011 season may be complete but there is sure to be just as much action when NASCAR returns in 2012. Tickets can be purchased now for both the LENOX Industrial Tools on July 15 and the SYLVANIA 300 on September 23 by calling the tracks ticket hotline at (603) 783-4931.
