Newman Captures Second Pole of the Weekend
Ryan Newman rocketed past the field, setting a new track record as he captured the pole position for Sunday’s LENOX Industrial Tools 301.
Behind the wheel of the No. 39 U.S. Army Chevrolet, Newman turned a lap of 135.232 mph in just over 28 seconds, shattering Brad Keselowski’s 2010 NHMS track record.
This is his second pole of the weekend and the 47th of his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career. Newman will also start from the front row in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour F.W. Webb 100 tomorrow.
“I have always been blessed with really good cars,” said Newman. “It’s like making really good macaroni and cheese sometimes, it just tastes good. I don’t always know the chemistry but I like it.”
Goodyear brought a new tire for “The Magic Mile Today” and it sure was fast. The entire top-12 starting positions broke Keselowski’s track record.
“It’s a new tire and that’s one part of it. We come back with a little bit better race cars, new technologies and more notes. The track hasn’t changed a lot so we know what to expect. But when you change the tires, they’re the only thing touching the race track, so when you change those it’s a big thing.”
Tony Stewart, who also happens to be Newman’s team owner, will start second. David Reutimann, Kurt Busch and Brad Keselowski round out the top-five qualifiers for Sunday.
NASCAR’s best will race for Loudon the Lobster this Sunday. Great seats for both Saturday and Sunday’s events are still available. To purchase tickets please call the NHMS ticket hotline at (603)783-4931 or by visiting www.nhms.com.
