Ryan “Rocketman” Newman captured his sixth New Hampshire Motor Speedway pole position during qualifying for Sunday’s SYLVANIA 300.
It didn’t come easy for the driver of the No. 39 Haas Automation Chevrolet. Newman was one of five drivers who had to wait out a 51 minute rain delay.
“I don't think I have seen that much drama going into the last five cars in all my years of racing,” said Newman. “My track was dry; I don't think it was any faster. I am just really proud of the team and hoping to follow what we did in the spring race.”
This continues impressive momentum for Newman who won the pole and the race during the LENOX Industrial Tools 301 at NHMS in July.
Kasey Kahne, driver of the No. 4 Red Bull Toyota will start second. Kahne was also second fastest in today’s practice session.
“We felt good in practice, said Kahne. “When we ended we weren't the best car, but we were pretty competitive. We definitely have a top-ten car this weekend.”
Kahne was also one of the five drivers waiting for the weather to stop; he wished there had not been a delay.
“It was a good effort. I thought the track was slicker that first lap. I was sliding around trying to get my tires in. The track would have been a little better with sprinkles. If I was the first car there, I would have rolled off for sure.”
