With a new Sprint Cup champion already crowned, the New Hampshire Motor Speedway is welcoming the New Year with a "new" of its own.  On Jan. 1, NHMS will change its Twitter handle (user name, for those of you not familiar with Twitter lingo) from @NHMotorSpeedway to simply @NHMS.

The new @NHMS handle is being created for a couple of reasons.  The first being that in the 140-character world of Twitter, the new name allows those interacting with @NHMS 11 more characters with which to communicate a message.  It also makes it easy to remember, as it's just the four letter abbreviation that fans tend to use when speaking about the track. (That is, unless they still haven't caught on that it's no longer NHIS, but we have a lot more work to do with those people than a simple handle change!)

It's important to note that we will simply change the name on our account.  If you already follow us @NHMotorSpeedway now, the only thing you'll need to do is get used to seeing tweets from @NHMS instead.  We'll also need your help to tell everyone.

Of course, it's easy for NHMS to make the change to the new handle, the harder part is getting it to stick.  So, we're turning to the fans to employ your help.  Starting Jan. 1, Twitter followers of @NHMS are encouraged to use a tweet that includes @NHMS and #NewYearNewHandle.  With 11 more characters with which to work, you should be able to better design your own messages, while incorporating those two phrases.

What will fans get for participation?  With a maximum of one entry per day, fans that use those two phrases in a tweet from Jan. 1-31 will be entered into a random drawing for Tony Stewart's Chase driver flag used during introductions of the 2011 SYLVANIA 300.

That's a pretty simple concept: new champion, New Year, new handle!  It all goes hand-in-hand, and it's all designed to make it easier to communicate with our fans across social media.  The winner will be announced on Feb. 1 and contacted through their Twitter account.

We hope that you'll help spread the word to everyone you know that @NHMS is the new Twitter handle.  For those of you struggling to think how you can do that, try typing this: Have you heard about @NHMS? It's a #NewYearNewHandle for The Magic Mile!

Happy New Year (and new handle), race fans!  Thank you, as always, for your support.
