On any given Sunday, NASCAR fans from across the country root for their favorite drivers to grab that elusive checkered flag and many of those fans dream of one day meeting their favorite NASCAR star. For one New Englander, meeting his favorite driver happened under the grandstand at New Hampshire Motor Speedway last September.
On a typical NASCAR weekend at “The Magic Mile,” thousands of spectators walk through the grandstands, so what are the odds that you will run into your favorite driver? Probably not that great, but for one fan, lady luck was on his side.
It was a September of firsts in 2007 for both NASCAR fan John Waseleski of Marion, Mass. and Sprint Cup Series driver Clint Bowyer. John attended his first NASCAR race and an eager Bowyer captured his first checkered flag at NHMS.
"My most memorable moment at New Hampshire Motor Speedway is obviously winning my first career Cup race there in 2007," said Clint Bowyer, driver of the No. 33 Cheerios/Hamburger Helper Chevrolet. "The fans went crazy when I crossed the finish line. It was a great way to start our Chase campaign by earning the victory in such a dominating fashion. Hearing the crowd cheering that loud for me is something I will never forget. I appreciated sharing that win with all the New England race fans."
From that year on Waseleski was a Bowyer fan. Two years later he had the chance to meet his favorite driver!
“When I was wearing my Clint Bowyer sweatshirt while walking under the grandstands I heard someone shout ‘hey!’ It was Clint,” said Waseleski. “I couldn’t believe it. We talked for a few minutes about racing and the upcoming Cup race on Sunday.”
Clint Bowyer will make his 10th career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start at NHMS this September when the series returns to the speedway for the SYLVANIA 300. After a fourth place finish at the Brickyard he has worked his way into the top-12 in points.
