The prestigious 41st Annual Don MacTavish Award was presented to New Hampshire Motor Speedway for its outstanding contribution to Northeast stock car racing at the American-Canadian Tour/Thunder Road Banquet of Champions in South Burlington, Vt. on Saturday night, January 16.
During the 2009 NASCAR SYLVANIA 300 weekend, New Hampshire Motor Speedway hosted the Inaugural ACT Invitational that showcased the talents of 36 of the best Late Model drivers from the Northeastern United States and Eastern Canada.
A record crowd saw the stars of the American-Canadian Tour (ACT), the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, and the NASCAR Camping World Trick Series compete in auto racing's "Super Saturday."
"We are proud to support grass roots racing and provide center stage for the American-Canadian Tour at the largest sports and entertainment facility in New England," said Jerry Gappens, executive vice president and general manager of New Hampshire Motor Speedway. "I want to thank Tom Curley and Ken Squier for their vision. It is truly an honor for our team at the speedway to be recognized by the Tour for a very successful event last year. We will display the MacTavish Cup in our main lobby with great pride."
This coveted Cup is named for legendary racer Don MacTavish from Dover, Mass.
Don began his racing career in his teens at Norwood Arena. He appeared on two of the most popular television shows of the 1960's, "ABC's Wide World of Sports and "To Tell the Truth," during his days as a demolition derby ace.
MacTavish went on to win 1966 NASCAR National Sportsman Championship stopping Rene Charland's Sportsman Championship run at 4 straight. He tragically lost his life in 1969 at Daytona International Speedway. Don was inducted into the New England Antique Racers in 2001.
Prior winners of the MacTavish Award include NASCAR founder, Bill France, Sr.; auto racing broadcast legend and Thunder Road founder, Ken Squier; and ACT President, Tom Curley.
Due to an overwhelming popular demand, fans will see all three divisions race again in "Super Saturday II" on September 18.
