Each Monday we take a look at the top performers from around the region over the weekend that was. Rain, again, played a prominent role in northern New England – washing out the scheduled ACT Late Model Tour event at Oxford Plains and most weekly shows in New Hampshire. Still, some impressive performances dotted what racing did take place.
Here we go:
1. Derek Ramstrom, West Boylston, Mass.
Ramstrom went 2-for-2 in the Super Late Model ranks over the weekend, winning the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series 30-lap Super Late Model feature at Thompson International Speedway on Thursday night and following that effort with his third career PASS North Series win at Star Speedway on Saturday.
Ramstrom survived a wild PASS race that saw every Top-5 finisher involved in at least one on-track incident, himself having been spun in Turn 3 early in the event. But after a near-miss at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in the season opener, Ramstrom rebounded nicely. The two-time defending Thompson SLM champ has won both events there this season.
2. Joey Polewarczyk Jr., Hudson, N.H.
The reigning ACT Invitational champion was impressive in just his second career PASS start – having won the pole and finishing an impressive third at Star Speedway on Saturday. Polewarczyk was involved in not one, but two, separate incidents that sent him off-track at Star – but he still had enough in the tank to finish ahead of PASS championship hopefuls like Johnny Clark, Lonnie Sommerville, Mike Rowe and others.
3. Keith Rocco, Wallingford, Conn.
The 2010 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion is hitting his stride in the SK Modified ranks of Connecticut. Rocco won the opening Thursday night 30-lap event at Thompson International Speedway and then followed that by claiming the 35-lap victory at Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday. It marked Rocco's third win already this year at Waterford.
Jon McKennedy of East Chelmsford, Mass., won the 40-lap Tour-type Modified feature at Star Speedway on Saturday night. McKennedy is the defending Valenti Modified Racing Series champion... Ted Christopher of Plainville, Conn., added to his all-time SK Modified win record at Stafford Motor Speedway (93) by winning the 40-lap feature there on Friday... Brian Andronaco Jr. of Wilton, Conn., earned his second career victory in the ACT-legal Late Model division at Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday.
