Each week we take a look back at the top performers from around the region.
Labor Day may serve as the traditional end of summer, but things are only just heating up on the northeast's racing scene. From Late Models to Modifieds, the racing around New England (and beyond) over the past week was as intense as it's been all season.
Without further ado, let's see who made The Podium this week:
1. Brian Hoar, Williston, Vt.
The eight-time ACT Late Model Tour champion earned his second win at Thunder Road International Speedbowl in as many ACT races there this season, capturing his second career Bond Auto Labor Day Classic 200 on Sunday. Hoar used a great pit stop to gain track position over the rest of the leaders and then led the final 93 laps en route to the victory.
In doing so, he also cut his deficit at the top of the Tour standings to just eight points – down from 44 two weeks ago – with only the season finale at Airborne Speedway on October 6 remaining.
2. Wayne Helliwell Jr., Dover, N.H.
Helliwell scored a runner-up finish in the ACT Labor Day Classic 200, won the season-ending Late Model 100 at Canaan Fair Speedway on Saturday night and posted two Top-5 finishes in twin small-block Supermodified features at Lee USA Speedway on Friday. He currently leads the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series New Hampshire state standings with 14 wins this season.
3. Cassius Clark, Farmington, Maine
Clark won his second open Super Late Model competition of the season in Canada, grabbing his first career Auto Value 250 Sunday night at Speedway 660 in Geary, New Brunswick. Less than three weeks earlier, Clark – the PASS North Series point leader and son of former NASCAR Busch North Series racer Billy Clark – won the Atlantic CAT 250 at Scotia Speedworld in Enfield, Nova Scotia.
Tommy Barrett of Millis, Mass., won the Shark Cycle 80 at Stafford Motor Speedway Friday night for his first career Valenti Modified Racing Series victory... Nick Sweet of Barre, Vt., won his second “King of the Road” track championship in three years at Thunder Road International Speedbowl on Saturday... Cris Michaud of Northfield, Vt., won the 100-lap Late Model season finale at Thunder Road on Saturday night for his second straight Late Model win there and third of the season... Chris Coolidge of Norway, Maine, won his first career Oxford Plains Speedway Late Model feature Saturday night at the track, the same night that Shawn Martin of Auburn, Maine, won his second career Late Model championship at the track... Brad Babb of Windham, Maine, won the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Maine state championship by becoming the third-generation Babb to win the track championship at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway... Joey Laquerre of East Montpelier, Vt., and Travis Stearns of Auburn, Maine, won mock qualifying races at New Hampshire Motor Speedway last Wednesday during an open test for ACT Late Model Tour teams in preparation for the Bond Auto ACT Invitational on September 22... Ryan Gifford of Winchester, Tenn., was fastest in NASCAR K&N Pro Series East practice at Greenville Pickens Speedway before rain postponed the event until late October... Keith Rocco of Wallingford, Conn., won the NEMA Lite feature at Waterford Speedbowl Saturday night for his first career win in a midget... Woody Pitkat of Stafford, Conn., won his third NASCAR Whelen All-American Series 30-lap SK Modified feature of the season at Thompson International Speedway on Thursday.
