Each Monday we take a look back at the week that was from around the region.
Non-touring “open” shows were the theme of last weekend, with some performers really shining through in the extra-distance competitions around northern New England. Modifieds, Late Models and even Sportsman-type cars were all on the docket.
Without further ado, let's look at who made The Podium:
1. Matt Hirschman, Northampton, Pa.
Hirschman won the SBM 125 at Star Speedway on Saturday night, an open show for Tour-type Modifieds. Though Hirschman is no longer a regular fixture on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, he has been one tough customer to beat on the open circuit.
For his dominating performance at Star, Hirschman collected roughly $9,000 in purse and award money. He's currently running the Race Of Champions Modified Tour, based mostly out of New York.
2. Craig Bushey, Fairfax, Vt.
Bushey won the I Am Vermont Strong 100 at Devil's Bowl Speedway on Friday night, one week after the main event was rained out. It was the biggest Late Model win of Bushey's career, and it came after he held off ACT Late Model Tour regulars Brian Hoar, Brent Dragon and Ricky Rolfe.
3. Dave Pembroke, Middlesex, Vt.
The 2011 “King of the Road” won his first feature event of the season, nipping Mike Bailey by two-hundredths of a second off the final corner to take the 50-lap Late Model feature Sunday at Thunder Road International Speedbowl. It was Pembroke's 14 career victory at the track and moved him into sole possession of third-place on Thunder Road's all-time Late Model win list.
Donald Theetge of Boischatel, Quebec, won his second consecutive ACT Castrol Series race on Saturday night for his 18th career Castrol Series victory – tops all-time in series history... Shawn Martin of Turner, Maine, became the third different winner in as many Late Model races this season at Oxford Plains Speedway when he won Saturday's 40-lap feature... Former K&N Pro Series East driver Alan Tardiff of Lyman, Maine, won his first NASCAR Whelen All-American Series feature at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in seven years when he took the 40-lap Pro Series event on Saturday... Ted Christopher of Plainville, Conn., won the 40-lap SK Modified feature at Stafford Motor Speedway on Friday for his 96th career victory in the division at the track... Dillon Moltz of Waterford, Conn., won his fourth Late Model feature of the season at the Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday... Wayne Helliwell of Dover, N.H., continued his dominate of the Late Model division at Canaan Fair Speedway by winning Saturday's feature event... Stacy Cahoon of St. Johnsbury, Vt., won the 50-lap Late Model main event at White Mountain Motorsports Park on Saturday night.
