Each Monday we take a look back at the week that was from around the region.

While rains threatened to hamper the schedule in New England over the weekend, virtually all scheduled events were able to be completed. Some drivers continued their hot starts to the year, others continued to streaks in extra-distance events and still others returned to Victory Lane after long absences.

Without further ado, let's see who made The Podium:

1. Jon McKennedy, Chelmsford, Mass.

McKennedy opened the Valenti Modified Racing Series 2-for-2 on the young season, claiming the 100-lap event at Monadnock Speedway on Saturday night.

McKennedy, the 2011 series champion, also won the season opener at Waterford Speedbowl last month.

2. Bruce Thomas Jr., Groton, Conn.

Thomas returned to Waterford's Victory Lane on Saturday night, capitalizing on a late-race restart to win the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series 30-lap Late Model feature. It was Thomas' first win since last October.

3. Brian Whitney, Burnham, Maine

Whitney won the 52-lap Late Model feature on opening day at Unity Raceway, the first Late Model event of the season held in the state of Maine. Whitney held off reigning track champion Jeff Burgess for the win, and marked his third extra-distance feature win of the last two seasons at Unity.

Honorable Mention

George Brunnhoelzl III, a Long Island native, won for the second time in three NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour starts at Caraway Speedway this season, sweeping practice, qualifying and the race... Ray Downing Jr. of Westbrook, Conn., won the 25-lap Street Stock feature at Waterford – his first victory at the track in almost 12 years... Mathew Burgoine of Newport, Maine, won the 25-lap NELCAR Legends feature at Unity on Saturday after leading every lap... Tyler Chadwick of Ledyard, Conn., won Saturday's 35-lap SK Modified feature at Waterford.
