QUALIFYING DAY: Getting Up To Speed At The UNOH Showdown At Thompson Int'l Speedway

Saturday, September 10, 2011

THOMPSON, Conn. – There are nearly 50 NASCAR Modifieds on the grounds at Thompson International Speedway, all of them here for tomorrow's inaugural UNOH Showdown.

As you probably already know, the day includes a pair of 125-lap points events for both the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour followed by a 50-lap Showdown pitting the top finishers from each of those races in a dash for cash.

Practice and qualifying for both NASCAR divisions in scheduled for today.

There are a total of 25 cars entered in the Whelen Modified Tour portion of the event, notably Ted Christopher returning to the seat of the No. 36 Ed Whelan-owned ride after a brief breakup. A couple of drivers not entered this weekend include Richie Pallai and Ron Yuhas.

On the Whelen Southern Modified Tour side, there are 23 teams entered – including rides for reigning NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion Keith Rocco, former Sprint Cup Series driver Steve Park and Modified Tour graduate Jeff Fuller.

The series has never competed north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

Of course, no Whelen Southern Modified Tour race would be complete without the Myers brothers – Burt and Jason are both here. Burt Myers ran two Tour races at Thompson in 2010, finishing 14th in both. New Hampshire native Andy Seuss, winner of the last two Southern Tour races, is here as one of that Tour's regulars.

There are also a number of northern-based drivers entered in the Whelen Southern Modified Tour race. Donny Lia, Rob Fuller, Jeff Malave and Thompson weekly competitor Rick Gentes are among the teams entered.

The teams will enjoy two combined practice sessions this afternoon, followed by separate time trial sessions to set the field for their respective 125s.
