LIVE: Gearing Up To Break Some Ice

Sunday, April 10, 2011

Greetings from a warm and sunny Thompson International Speedway where – get this – we're wearing short-sleeved shirts in anticipation of today's season-opening NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Icebreaker 150.

A field of 33 cars are set to take the green flag at approximately 3 p.m. this afternoon.

Just to follow up on a couple of storylines from Saturday's qualifying day here at Thompson:

GIVE HIM A HAND: Ted Christopher, an 11-time Tour race winner at the high-banked .625-mile oval, is working with an injured hand. He was wearing a soft cast after having done ligament damage to his right hand in a crash in a Whelen Southern Modified Tour event at Caraway Speedway.

He said the hand wasn't a problem in during practice or qualifying yesterday in his Tour car, but in an SK modified heat race prior to time trials it flared up on him.

"(The hand) was good until I mis-shifted in the SK race, then it hurt like hell," Christopher said. "Their levers (inside the car) are sort of on an angle, where the Tour stuff is all straight. So now we've got to move the lever further forward.

"I didn't think it would be a problem shifting, but it was."

LINE OF THE DAY: Great line post-qualifying from 2010 Mod Tour Rookie of the Year Justin Bonsignore.

"It was good to break the track record – but it's a little frustrating that it wasn't good enough to get the pole," he said.

Bonsignore qualified third and was one of four drivers to break the existing track record.

WHO YOU GOT? Santos? Christopher? Stefanik? Silk? "The Woonsocket Rocket" Rick Gentes?

Leave a comment, let us know who you think is going to Victory Lane after 150 laps today at Thompson.
