Newgarden Wins Firestone Indy Lights 100
Josef Newgarden dominated the Firestone Indy Lights 100 race today at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, leading from the green flag to the checkered and extending his championship lead.
Newgarden, who pilots the No. 11 Copart/Score Big/Robo-Pong/SSM for Sam Schmidt Motorsports, zipped around “The Magic Mile,” lapping the entire 12 car field, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished in the series since 2004 at Phoenix.
“It was an easy cruise to the finish, but a really great day,” said Newgarden. “It is such a challenging set of courses we go to. We go to everything. It is the best training ground you can get if you want to race INDYCAR. You can't let it slip away when you have something like this. You can't take anything for granted, because it is not over until it is over.”
This was the Hendersonville, Tenn., native’s fifth win of 2011. He also boasts seven top-five and nine top-10 finishes.
Jorge Goncalvez, who pilots the No. 4 Belardi Auto Racing Special for Belardi Auto Racing finished a career best second place.
“After I passed my teammate, it felt like I was going faster every lap,” said Gonalvez. “I got good restarts and just kept it going. I was happy with the car in the very end. We ran fast.”
