Sprint Cup Series Returns Twice in 2016
For the 20th straight season, New Hampshire Motor Speedway will host a pair of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races in 2016. The speedway holds two crucial NASCAR dates, Sunday, July 17 and Sunday, Sept. 25 - the only national series events in New England. The fall race will be part of NASCAR's Chase for the Sprint Cup championship as the second race in the opening Challenger Round.
NASCAR's premier stock car division has raced at the Magic mile since 1993, making two annual stops since 1997. The speedway has hosted a race in the Chase since its inception in 2004. As part of its schedule announcement, NASCAR also announced new five-year sanction agreements with national series tracks, including all eight facilities owned by Speedway Motorsports, Inc., which includes NHMS.
"This is fantastic news that SMI has locked in NASCAR dates for the next five years," said David McGrath, executive vice president and general manager of the speedway. "This gives our fans the opportunity to make their race weekend plans earlier and gives us the ability to roll out race dates to help accommodate families and our well-traveled devotees. We appreciate the opportunity to not only put on a great show in the summer, but to do it again in the fall during the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship."
NASCAR officials also released the schedule for the XFINITY Series, which will run at the Magic Mile for the 26th straight year on Saturday, July 16.
McGrath also noted that discussions continue with both NASCAR and American-Canadian Tour officials regarding those series racing at NHMS in 2016. While dates have not been finalized for the Camping World Truck Series and regional touring series (K&N Pro Series East, Whelen Modified Tour and the ACT), McGrath expects an announcement to come soon.
