Picture Perfect Start to 89th Loudon Classic
Drenched with rays of sunshine, riders took to the track in near-perfect conditions during the opening day of the 89th annual Loudon Classic motorcycle weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
The top riders in the region fought tooth-and-nail through the 1.6-mile road course at “The Magic Mile,” as members of the Loudon Road Race Series (LRRS) and Side Car Racers Association (SCRA) competed in 13 races, culminating with the LRRS Short Track Asphalt Program.
Among the race winners today was Shane Narbonne, who picked up a victory in the Expert/Amateur GTO. On Saturday, Narbonne will look to defend his Loudon Classic Middle Weight Grand Prix title, a race he also won in 2009.
“We ran some pretty good times,” said Narbonne of his win in the GTO. “There’s really no pressure on me (to win the Classic), I just go out there like it’s any other race. But it would be nice win it for a third time and second time in a row.”
The Loudon Classic is the longest-running motorcycle race in America, a historic fact that isn’t lost on the 22-year-old native of Tyngsboro, Mass.
“I was the youngest one to win it, which is pretty good,” Narbonne said. “Definitely would be good to win it again.”
Other day one winners include Erik Green and Heather Yampolsky (Vintage Sidecar), Robert Hill (Rookie race), Rick Doucette (GTL and LW Grand Prix), Lee Schmidt (Novice Formula 1), John Perkins (Novice Formula 3), Shawn Spear (125 GP), Antonio Marchetti (Amateur Unlimited GP), Patrice Cort (Novice Formula 2), Harlan Hildebrand (Novice Formula 4), Gennaro Ameno (Amateur Ultralight Superbike) and Eric Wood (MW Superbike), who finished runner-up to Narbonne in last year’s Classic.
Day two of racing begins on Saturday at 12:20 p.m.
