NHMS Hosts Formula Hybrid Competition
Marty McFly and his “flux capacitor” would be proud of what’s happening at New Hampshire Motor Speedway this week. We are going “Back to the Future”, with the exciting return of the 6th Annual Formula Hybrid Competition.
On Wednesday, May 2, college undergraduates and graduates from around the world will compete in several categories as these built from scratch hybrid vehicles are put to the ultimate test. The goal: show how new technology and a little bit of ingenuity can combine to produce impressive results.
Thirty-six schools are competing, including students from China, Brazil, Spain and Canada. They will be on the track all day Wednesday competing in various tests including acceleration, design, handling and endurance. This year for the first time, an all-electric category will be included in the event, sponsored by the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth.
“The technology on display in these cars this week at NHMS is truly a glimpse at the technology we will all be using in our own vehicles in the near future,” says Jerry Gappens, executive vice president and general manager of New Hampshire Motor Speedway. “We are honored to once again host this exciting and educational event. I know that every time these amazing students come to compete, I learn a great deal more about alternative energy powered vehicles. They are an inspiration.”
At last year’s event, Texas A&M University dominated the three-day event.
The morning schedule features acceleration runs and at 1:00, the autocross endurance run will be held. The public is invited to watch and tour through the garage area to check out these amazing hybrid vehicles. An event schedule can be found by clicking here.
Great seats, camping, hospitality, and VIP packages are still available for the LENOX Industrial Tools 301 on July 15 or the SYLVANIA 300 on Sept. 23. To purchase them, please call the speedway ticket hotline at (603) 783-4931. More information on events may be found on nhms.com.
