Jamie Lee Thurston to Headline FanFest
One of the most recognizable voices in country music today, New Englander Jamie Lee Thurston will hit the WOKQ FanFest stage for next month SYLVANIA 300 NASCAR weekend at “The Magic Mile.” New Hampshire Motor Speedway officials announced the baritone’s inclusion as the feature act on Sept. 20 in the Broadway Midway at 9 p.m.
A native of Central, Vermont, Thurston was recognized in June with two Independent Country Music Association nominations ("Best Musician" and "Best Live Performance") for his performance at a charity event held in South Burlington, VT for the benefit of victims devastated by the May 2011 flood in Green Mountain State. Thurston took home the award for "Best Live Performance." Thurston’s life story has also been optioned for a future Hollywood film.
Asked about his inclusion at FanFest, Thurston was excited for the opportunity to perform in front of his “home” crowd.
“Racing fans are my kind of people and playing in New England is always a ‘welcome home,’ ” said Thurston, who now resides in Nashville, Tenn. “The combination at FanFest – New Hampshire Motor Speedway – is a green flag for one helluva party.”
Thurston joins a premier list of talent to have performed FanFest, including Steel Magnolia, Trailer Choir, Brett Eldredge, Chuck Wicks, and most recently, the Eric Grant Band during FanFest in July.
Thurston spent years playing in bars and clubs across the Northeast and Canada before drawing the attention of a wider audience. Opening for superstar country acts such as the Dixie Chicks, Jason Aldean, Brad Paisley, Billy Currington, Travis Tritt and Charlie Daniels, Thurston eventually scored a record deal with Warner Brothers.
A publishing deal with EMI (Electric and Musical Industries) led to songs being recorded by the likes of Trace Adkins and Montgomery Gentry. In 2009, Thurston scored his first major national airplay when Rodney Atkins covered “15 Minutes,” an instant hit that Thurston penned with his prolific writing partner, Tony Mullins.
FanFest begins at 5:30 p.m., and will include the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Hauler Parade beginning at 6:30 p.m., an exclusive opportunity that allows fans to see the colorful rigs that bring their favorite driver’s car to the track for race weekend.
Other entertainment scheduled for WOKQ FanFest includes a Q&A with a NASCAR Sprint Cup driver, Balloon Artist, Raffles, Caricatures and Animal Show, as well as surprise appearances from other NASCAR drivers.
FanFest provides fans with a jumpstart to an exciting weekend of NASCAR racing that includes the Whelen Modified Tour F.W. Webb 100, K&N Pro Series East G-Oil 100 and American-Canadian Tour Bond Auto Parts ACT Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 22, and the Sprint Cup Series SYLVANIA 300 on Sunday, Sept. 23.
