Gappens Predicts Primary on NHMS Visit
With the entire country focusing on New Hampshire's "First-in-the-Nation" Presidential Primary tomorrow, Jerry Gappens, executive vice president and general manager of New Hampshire Motor Speedway, says Mitt Romney will win big over his other GOP rivals at tomorrow's polls. And just like Tony Stewart did here in September, Romney will use his momentum from New Hampshire to win the big prize, the Presidential election in November.
"My formula is simple," explains Gappens. "It's about relationships and getting in touch with the people. Mitt Romney has had a strong presence at our major NASCAR races here in New Hampshire, including being the guest of track owner Bruton Smith in July and previous visits in the past. In addition, just prior to the start of last year's Daytona 500, I was surprised to see him on pit road, and he actually took a few moments to discuss NASCAR racing, politics and his love for New Hampshire with me," Gappens said. "In August, I spoke with him again at former track owner Bob Bahre's summer party at Lake Winnipesaukee.
"The fans at NASCAR races represent the true fabric of Americana," Gappens added. "I think Mitt Romney understands the power of the 'NASCAR Nation' and is totally plugged into it. He was the only candidate in the GOP field who visited New Hampshire Motor Speedway during one of the major NASCAR races in 2011. That puts him in lofty company," says Gappens.
"The Magic Mile" has been host to an impressive line of Primary winners. John McCain made multiple trips to the speedway to greet fans and talk to voters. McCain owned the Granite State's Primary in 2000 and 2008. Bob Dole also made it a point to swing by and shake hands with fans and went on to capture the GOP nomination in 1996.
"I'd like to think there's a little election magic here at NHMS," says Gappens. "Romney did the work and because of that I predict that work will pay off with a trip to our state's victory lane tomorrow."
For Stewart, his win in the SYLVANIA 300, helped propel him on to the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship.
"However, if Dale Earnhardt Jr. was on the ballot I might change my prediction," Gappens joked. "He is the most prolific vote getter in NASCAR history, winning the Most Popular Driver award nine consecutive years and totaling more than nine million votes in the process. Junior has certainly received more votes in his career than most politicians!"
