In the Draft: Sadler Looking Forward to Phoenix
Wow, what a wild Daytona weekend! We had an incredible run in the Truck Series event on Friday. We barely missed the win! It would have been such an awesome experience to go to Victory Lane for the first time for our new partner OneMain Financial, but it just wasn't meant to be.OneMain Financial will be back on our car in Texas but for the next few weeks we have several new sponsors that we hope to take to Victory Lane for the first time. Our Nationwide day wasn't what we had hoped for either, but now we get to head into one of my favorite tracks, Phoenix International Raceway.
I love the Phoenix track. It has so many racing grooves and is such a driver's race track. As we head to the track in the land of the rising sun, we are going to bring with us a new partner. The marketing group spoke with Kevin [Harvick] and found out that Rick Mears was one of his favorite drivers growing up, so they chose to base their design off an old Rick Mears scheme, one that he won a lot of races with. I hope the paint scheme brings us some good luck so we can take them to Victory Lane. I always love having new companies come on board. Some of their guests have never had the experience of seeing a live race and to me that is the best, when we can introduce new fans to the sport and especially when they are part of our sponsor partner family.
Kevin Harvick Inc. has a storied history at the one-mile track in Phoenix. This is the 10-year anniversary of KHI as an organization. I just can't believe that this organization has earned so much success in 10 short years. It really is amazing. The success began right here at Phoenix International Raceway, when Kevin won the first Truck Series race for KHI in 2002. Since then, KHI has earned five Truck Series wins at Phoenix and my teammate Ron Hornaday wrapped up his last championship here.
As much as I love the track in Phoenix I also like to get away when I'm out on the West Coast. The weather is usually ideal. I like to get away and try to get a round of golf in. I really enjoy golfing. I even had the opportunity last weekend to call into the show The Morning Driver on the Golf Channel to discuss how golf and racing are related. My boss Kevin now shares in my passion for golf. I've known Kevin a long time and I have to say I never thought he would ever take up golf. He is not exactly known for being patient, but I'm glad he found what I find in golf -- a way to relax and take your mind off racing for a little bit.
Not only are there some of the nicest golf greens in Phoenix, the fans in Arizona are the best. They always come out to the track to enjoy tight side-by-side racing, despite really hot conditions that being in the desert sometimes brings. I not only enjoy golf but my second favorite pastime is, well, eating. When I'm in Phoenix I always try to sneak up to the Scottsdale area and eat at my favorite restaurant, City Hall. The food is great with a wonderful atmosphere.
Although there are a lot of things I enjoy doing in Phoenix, the best part is the racing. I look forward to learning some new techniques from what I consider two of the best West Coast drivers, Hornaday and Harvick. With all of their success at this track, I know that we have the notes to be successful. Despite our rough start in Daytona, we are looking forward to getting back to my roots and doing a little short track racing this weekend.
I just want to finally thank all of the fans for a wonderful start to the season. Your support for my new role at KHI has been amazing! NASCAR fans really are the best. Be sure to check back to NASCAR.COM every other week to check out my new diary entry.
Until next time, HOLLA! See you after Phoenix!
