Bonsignore Gets First NHMS Win
Justin Bonsignore led most of Saturday afternoon's F.W. Webb 100. But it took stellar racing over the last 25 pressure-filled laps, including a green-white-checkered finish, to solidify the 28-year-old's first-career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victory at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
"The guys gave me a great car today. This is the same car I destroyed in Bristol," said Bonsignore, whose previous best finish at NHMS was a third back in 2011. "There's no better way to honor the guys than to get to victory lane. This is a dream come true, I have been wanting this for a long time."
Bonsignore held off Ronnie Silk, a two-time NHMS winner, and Doug Coby, who was looking for his third straight victory on the 1.058-mile oval. The win tightens up the point standings a bit, as Coby entered Saturday's F.W. Webb 100 with a 20-point lead over Bonsignore with three races remaining on the schedule.
"Coming to the white flag I was sitting second and thought I had a good shot at him on the backstretch," said Silk. "But I got really loose and lost ground, and just couldn't catch him. I count that as a missed opportunity, that's the way it went."
"I was on the bottom on a lot of restarts and it just hurt us," said Coby, who came into Saturday with four wins in his last eight NHMS starts. "It seemed like every time I was in second and had a run at the leader the caution would come out. It was just one of those days."
Matt Swanson, Ryan Newman, Patrick Emerling, Jimmy Blewett, Max Zachem, Timmy Solomito and Donny Lia round out the top-10.
"This is huge. We have struggled here notoriously for five or six years, I haven't led a lap since 2011," said Bonsignore, who led more than 70 of the 106 laps on Saturday. "But right away I knew we had a really good car. I'm at a loss for words for what this means."
