89th Annual Expected to Be Instant Classic
In 2009, Shane Narbonne was only 19 years old when he coasted into victory lane at “The Magic Mile” for the first time. He had to wait until his 21st birthday to make it back. On Saturday, June 16, Narbonne will be looking to make his third trip in four years when he competes in the 89th Loudon Classic, the longest motorcycle event in North America, at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
"I was sick last year. This year, I definitely (felt) much better,” said Narbonne, following last year's victory. "I knew if I got a good start I could just put my head down and pull away."
There will be plenty in the field that will have a lot to say about the Tyngsboro, Mass., native’s quest at back-to-back titles in the three-day weekend’s premier event. Especially with the largest purse of the Loudon Road Race Series on the line.
Eric Wood (Ashburnham, Mass.), 2010 champion Scott Greenwood (Dunbarton, N.H.) and Cory Hildebrand (Milford, N.H.), who finished second, third and fourth, respectively, last year, will be the top threats at dethroning the defending champion and taking home the $1,000 first-place purse.
“This is always an exciting weekend,” said Jerry Gappens, executive vice president and general manager of New Hampshire Motor Speedway. “I think to add such a lucrative purse to our main event will certainly give some of the best riders of our region extra incentive and give our fans one heck of a race to watch.”
Last year’s race fell six laps short of the scheduled 20 laps, due to a red flag accident on lap 14 that ended the race. Loudon Road Race Series rules state that as soon as a race reaches its halfway point, the race is deemed official.
The 89th Loudon Classic weekend begins Friday, June 15, and will run through Sunday, June 17.
The Loudon Classic is part of the 2012 season of speed at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, which also includes the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series LENOX Industrial Tools 301 on July 15, and the SYLVANIA 300 on Sept. 23.
