Martinsville: Three Drivers To Watch
After letting the drivers open it up out west, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will tighten up the field with a race on the 0.526-mile oval at Martinsville Speedway. The theme this weekend is Crazy Eights: two drivers in the field have eight wins at the track, while one that has struggled at it has a string of eight consecutive races with a top-two finish.
Here are three headline name drivers to watch at Martinsville:
Green Flag - Jimmie Johnson
The driver of the No. 48 is a machine at Martinsville. He has eight wins in 26 starts and has finished out of the top-10 on just four occasions. He's fallen off the last two races this season, failing to lead any laps after leading at least 39 laps in each of the first three, but still managed finishes of 11th and ninth, respectively.
Yellow Flag - Jeff Gordon
Eight wins and 28 top-fives in 44 starts at Martinsville puts Jeff Gordon in the mix as a favorite. He's struggled out of the gate, but his finishes of ninth and 10th in the last two races have him racing at a similar level to Johnson right now. Both could be exceptional in this race, but Gordon has lacked the consistency so far this season to be a sure bet.
Red Flag - Kevin Harvick
The run of eight consecutive top-twos is extremely impressive, but it will be a heck of a lot more impressive if it still exists after Sunday's race. Harvick as a mere three top-fives and a 16.4 average finish in 27 starts at Martinsville. The odds are against him finishing up front again, but you never know with the level he's been on recently.
