FANTASY: Pure Need For Speed
Michigan International Speedway is all about one thing: speed. At two miles around, it measures out to be one of NASCAR's largest ovals not to use a restrictor plate for speed regulation. That means it's a pedal-to-the-medal, fastest-car-wins kind of weekend. Skill is always important, but this weekend, it will only matter for the few drivers lucky enough to be driving in the cars most dialed in for speed.
Here's a look at the drivers with the best chances to perform in fantasy NASCAR:
Green Flag - Matt Kenseth
Still without a win on the season, Kenseth is overdue to visit victory lane. He has a 9.8 average finish at Michigan with two wins and 18 top-10s in 30 starts at the track. He's quietly sitting in third in points, which shows that despite the lack of a win, he's more consistent than most.
Caution Flag - Carl Edwards
The only two top-10s for Edwards in his last 10 races have both come on road courses. His last oval top-10 was in Charlotte on Memorial Day Weekend. However, he sits sixth in points, so he hasn't struggled that badly this season. He has 15 top-10s in 20 starts at Michigan, which includes two wins, so this could be a good week for him to start a hot streak.
Red Flag - Denny Hamlin
He has two wins at Michigan, but crew chief Darian Grubb is suspended until the beginning of the Chase. That could hurt at a track like this one, where adjustments to speed up the car could mean the difference between a top-five and a finish on the border of the top-20. The lack of the usual leader atop the pit box, especially one of Grubb's caliber, could affect communication and strategy.
