California: Three Drivers To Watch
Another week, another win for Kevin Harvick. He's so hot right now, it's not really even worth giving him the "Green Flag" in the preview. In fact, he's making a case to add a "Checkered Flag" section just for himself. He's from Bakersfield, Cali., not far from Auto Club Speedway where this weekend's race will run, and hopes to win in front of his home crowd for the second time in his career.
Here are a few other drivers whose performance is worth watching this weekend:
Green Flag - Jimmie Johnson
The southern California native has won 25% of his starts at Auto Club Speedway (5 for 20), has 12 top-fives, and an average finish of 6.6. He's been overshadowed by Kevin Harvick's dominance, but take away his 41st in Las Vegas, where he did lead 45 laps, and he'd be right up there in the points.
Yellow Flag - Kyle Larson
It was only one race, but the California native earned his first career Sprint Cup Series top-five with a second-place finish at this track last spring. The finish came a day after he won the NASCAR XFINITY Series race at the track, so he's already establishing a strong track record.
Red Flag - David Ragan
The hope was that taking over the No. 18 in the absence of Kyle Busch would give Ragan an opportunity to excel in the Sprint Cup Series. That hasn't come to pass. Ragan has finishes of 18th, 22nd, and 21st in three races in the car so far this season. He needs to do better or the opportunity to race for wins on a weekly basis at the Cup level might be over for him. It's not fair to ask him to replicate Busch's win at Auto Club Speedway from last season, but a top-10 seems like a necessary target.
